Overview
History
The clan comprises his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib's house and his uncles Abu Talib, Hamza and al-Abbas — his blood uncles, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Its charge grew great when the tribe took shelter in it during the boycott of Shi'b Abi Talib — an ordeal in which the bond held even with members who had not become Muslim 1.
After Abu Talib's death the roles followed: al-Abbas's diplomatic leadership, Hamza's martyrdom at Uhud, and — in Shia belief — the inheritance of the imamate through Ali and Fatima 2.
Legacy
From this clan sprang the Abbasids, then Jordan's Hashemites and Morocco's Alawis; Hashimi lineage became in Sunni heritage the state's noblest pedigree, and in Imami heritage the very title of authority 3.
