Summary

Al-Miswar ibn Makhrama ibn Nawfal al-Zuhri, kunya Abu Abd al-Rahman; his mother Atika bint Awf, sister of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who became Muslim and emigrated 1.

His birth and companionship

Yahya ibn Bukayr said he was born two years after the hijra and came to Medina in Dhu al-Hijja after the conquest, year 8 AH, a blooming lad of six 1. Al-Baghawi said he preserved hadiths from the Prophet — his hadith from the Prophet on the betrothal of Aliya bint Abi Jahl is in the two Sahihs and elsewhere 1.

In one of Muslim's chains it reads: "I heard the Prophet while I was a man of wet dreams" — pointing to birth before the hijra; but the scholars are unanimous he was born after it, some explaining "muhtalim" as from hilm with kasra, not hukm with damma — meaning he was discerning and retentive 1.

His affairs

Mus'ab said he kept close to Umar ibn al-Khattab; al-Zubayr said he was of the people of merit and religion. He was with his uncle Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf on the nights of the shura and preserved things from him, then was with Ibn al-Zubayr 1.

His death

In the first siege a mangonel stone struck him while he prayed; he lingered five days and died the day the news of Yazid ibn Mu'awiya's death came, year 64 AH, per Yahya ibn Bukayr and Abu Mushar 1. Al-Tabari quotes Ibn Ma'in that he died in 73 AH, which Ibn Hajar rebuts as an error: the scholars agreed he died in the first siege of Ibn al-Zubayr, whereas al-Hajjaj's siege of 73 AH — al-Miswar did not live to its time 1.
