Amir ibn al-Tufayl

Chief of Banu Amir ibn Sa'sa'a who betrayed the men of the Well of Ma'una, then plotted with Arbad ibn Qays to assassinate the Prophet in the delegation of year 9 AH — and died of a tumour in his neck ¹.

Amir ibn al-Tufayl was among Banu Amir's chiefs — "their devils", as al-Mubarakpuri describes them — and the one who betrayed the men of the Well of Ma'una ¹. When Banu Amir's delegation meant to come to Medina in year 9 AH, Amir and Arbad plotted to assassinate the Prophet: Amir kept the Prophet talking while Arbad circled behind him and drew his sword a span — and God stayed his hand ¹. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Amir came to the Prophet and set him a choice of three: that the people of the plain be the Prophet's and the people of the towns his, or that he be his successor after him, or that he raid him with Ghatafan, a thousand red-haired and a thousand fair ². The Prophet prayed against them; Amir alighted at a Saluli woman's, was stricken with a tumour in his neck and died saying: "a tumour like a camel's tumour, and death in the Saluli woman's house!" ¹.
