Amr ibn Hazm

عمرو بن حزم

An Ansari, brother of Umara ibn Hazm; he took part in al-Khandaq and later campaigns, and the Prophet appointed him over Najran; his son Muhammad narrated from him a letter the Prophet wrote for him on the obligations, zakat and blood-money, which Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban and al-Darimi record; Abu Nu'aym says he died under Umar, while Ibn Hajar judges it likelier that he lived past the fifties AH.

Summary

Amr ibn Hazm ibn Zayd ibn Lawdhan al-Ansari, kunya Abu al-Dahhak; his brother is Umara 1. He witnessed the Trench and what followed, and the Prophet appointed him over Najran 1.

The letter

His son Muhammad relates from him a letter the Prophet wrote him containing the obligations, the zakat, the blood-moneys and other matters; Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, al-Darimi and more than one recorded it 1.

His death

Abu Nu'aym said he died in Umar's caliphate, and so said Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir in al-Tabaqat; it is also said after fifty — Ibn Hajar says this is nearer the truth, for Musnad Abi Ya'la carries on a chain of trustworthy men that he spoke to Mu'awiya forcefully on the matter of his pledge to Yazid 1. In al-Tabarani and elsewhere he related to Mu'awiya and to Amr ibn al-As the hadith: "the rebel band will kill Ammar" 1.

The 'master of the reciters' among the Ansar, present at the second pledge of al-Aqaba, at Badr and in all the campaigns; the Prophet told him that God had commanded him to recite to him, and Umar called him the master of the Muslims; the date of his death is given from 19 AH to 32 AH, and Abu Nu'aym favours the caliphate of Uthman.
