Summary

One of the three left behind, of Banu Waqif; an old man by his wife's account, to whom leave was given to serve him during the shunning of the wives. 1

In the story

Ibn Ishaq names him among the three, and Ka'b names him "Hilal ibn [Abi] Umayya al-Waqifi". 2 His wife told the Prophet he was an old man at a loss with no servant, weeping since his affair began; he gave her leave to serve him on condition he not come near her. 3

Source notes and markers of doubt

  • "Abi" is an addition in brackets from manuscript (a) (p. 178 n. 1); elsewhere in the report the likelier reading is "Hilal ibn Umayya".
  • He is named in the text only by his descent from Waqif.
