    Overview

Hulayl ibn Hubshiyya al-Khuza'i: governor of Mecca in the time of Qusayy's arrival, father of his wife Hubba; at his death the struggle over the House's rule began.

    Life

He was Mecca's governor when Qusayy ibn Kilab grew up and returned to it; Qusayy asked for his daughter Hubba's hand — Hulayl took a liking to him and married her to him 1.

When Hulayl died, war broke out between Khuza'a and Quraysh, ending with Qusayy taking charge of Mecca and the House 2. In one telling, Hulayl bequeathed to Qusayy the charge of the Ka'ba; in another he gave his daughter the rule of the House and Abu Ghubshan held it for her as a trustee 2.

The Expulsion of Jurhum from Mecca

After some twenty centuries of Jurhumite rule over Mecca, their tyranny over pilgrims and appropriation of the Kaaba’s wealth turns the Adnani clans against them; Khuzaʾa, with Banu Bakr ibn Abd Manaf, expels them in the mid-second century CE — and the departing Jurhumites bury Zamzam and carry off the two golden gazelles and the Black Stone.
