Overview

A man of the Banu Layth who was in the expedition of Ibn Abi Hadrad to Idam. He charged at Amir ibn al-Adbat after the latter had given the greeting of Islam, and killed him "for something that was between them", and took his camel and goods. 1

The blood-money

When the blood-debt was contested at Hunayn and the blood-money was accepted, he came in a garment in which he had prepared himself to be killed. The Prophet said to him, three times: "O God, do not forgive Muhallim ibn Jathama." He rose and caught his tears in his cloak. 2

Ibn Ishaq relates from al-Hasan al-Basri that the Prophet said to him: "You gave him safety in God, then you killed him." He died seven days later, and the earth cast him out until his people piled stones over him. 3

Notes on the report

  • His name is "Muhallim" in Ibn Hisham and in others than Ibn Ishaq, and "Mulajjam" in Ibn Ishaq as he related it on the authority of Ziyad. 3
  • The report of his death and of the ground's rejection comes as a transmission from al-Hasan al-Basri from someone Ibn Ishaq does not name. 3
