Summary

After settling in Medina, the Prophet made a historic pact of brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar, binding society by the tie of faith, dissolving tribal partisanship and resolving the crisis of the emigrants who had left their wealth and homes in Mecca. 1

The pact and its place

The Muslims gathered in the house of Anas ibn Malik, and the Prophet made brotherhood between ninety men — forty-five Muhajirun and as many Ansar (or, it is said, a hundred) — a binding compact of rights and mutual support under which they even inherited from one another in place of blood kin, until inheritance between them was abrogated after Badr by the revelation of al-Anfal 75. 1 2

Scenes of selflessness and support

The Ansar set the finest examples of selflessness, offering the Prophet to split their palm groves half-and-half with their emigrant brothers; the Prophet declined that and settled on sharing the fruit in return for the Muhajirun's work and watering. 3 4

Its most famous scene is the Prophet's brothering of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf and Sa'd ibn al-Rabi': Sa'd offered him half his wealth and one of his two wives; Abd al-Rahman thanked him, prayed for blessing on him, and asked to be shown the market — he bought and sold in the market of Banu Qaynuqa until he prospered and grew independent. 3 5
