Overview

The Muhajirun — those who left home and wealth in Mecca, emigrating to God and His messenger — are the state's first emirs, its first four caliphs, and its army commanders in the conquests.

History

The emigrations began small — Abyssinia first — then turned after Aqaba into a collective move to Yathrib ¹. In Medina the Prophet made brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar, until the kinless emigrant became a brother in portion and creed ².

They led its succession after his death — Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman — and in the Sunni tradition they alone hold the class "the first forerunners of the Muhajirun" attested by the Qur'an; among them the conquests' commanders Khalid, Amr, al-Zubayr and Sa'd ³.

Legacy

"Hijra" became the creed's own term — forsaking the homeland for the religion — and the knot of every later brotherhood between stranger and native, from the Ansar to modern jihad movements ².
