Overview

At the pilgrimage season of the eleventh year of the mission, after the Prophet had gone out in the dark to present himself to the tribes, he heard the voices of men at the Aqaba of Mina, and went to them. They were six young men of the Khazraj from Yathrib. 1 He asked them who they were; they said: a group of the Khazraj. He said: are you among the clients of the Jews? They said yes, so he sat with them, explained Islam to them and recited the Qur'an to them. 2

The six

The book counts among them As'ad ibn Zurara of the Banu al-Najjar, Awf ibn al-Harith of the Banu al-Najjar, Rafi' ibn Malik of the Banu Zurayq, Qutba ibn Amir of the Banu Salima, Uqba ibn Amir of the Banu Haram ibn Ka'b, and Jabir ibn Abd Allah ibn Ri'ab of the Banu Ubayd ibn Ghanm. 1

Why they hastened

The people of Yathrib heard from the Jews of Medina that a prophet was about to be sent in this time, and some said to others: by God, he is the prophet the Jews have threatened you with, so do not let them outstrip you to him; then they accepted Islam. 1 2 The sensible men of Yathrib had been worn out by the civil war, and they hoped that his call would be the cause of ending the war between the Aws and the Khazraj. 2

Afterwards

The six returned to Medina bearing the message of Islam, until there was no house among the Ansar in which there was no mention of the Prophet. 2

Notes for researchers

  • The book places the story of the six before the first Pledge of al-Aqaba, and does not define the interval between them. 2
