Overview

Ibn Battuta's route from Basra to Fars and Iraq al-Ajam, and then his return to Baghdad, as he recounts it in his journey 1. The road passes through al-Ubulla and Abadan in the Gulf, then by land through Tustar and Ayadhaj to Isfahan and Shiraz, and then returns to Iraq by way of Kufa.

The route

From Basra he boarded a sunbuq to al-Ubulla 2, then a small boat to Abadan 3.

From Abadan he sailed for four days to the town of Majul, then travelled by land through Ramiz as far as Tustar 4. From Tustar, three days through lofty mountains brought him to Ayadhaj 5. He then went on to Isfahan, passing the towns of Ishtakhran and Firuzan 6.

From Isfahan he headed for Shiraz, passing Kulayl, Isawma', Dasht al-Rum and Mayin 7, and he stayed there a long time 8. He then went out to Kazarun 9, then to al-Zaydin and al-Huwayza, and from there he set out for Kufa across the desert 10.

From Kufa he passed the well of Mulaha, then al-Hilla and Karbala, and from there went on to Baghdad 11. From Baghdad he travelled for ten days with the sultan Abu Sa'id's camp as far as Tabriz 12, and then returned to Baghdad with a letter to its governor 13.
