Overview

Ibn Battuta's route after he reached Tabriz: he returned to Baghdad, then passed Samarra and Tikrit to Mosul, then Nasibin, and headed for Diyar Bakr, then returned to Mosul and Baghdad 1.

The route

After he reached Tabriz and met the sultan in his camp, the sultan ordered provisions and a mount for him, and wrote to the governor of Baghdad, so he returned to Baghdad 2. The time before the departure of the caravan was more than two months, so he set out for Mosul and Diyar Bakr to see them, then planned to return to Baghdad before the caravan left 2.

From Baghdad he went north along the bank of the Tigris: a station watered by many villages, then a large village after two days, then a place near the fortress of al-Ma'shuq, with Samarra to its east 2. From there one stage led to Tikrit 3.

From Tikrit two stages led to the village of al-Maqar, then al-Qayyara and the springs of pitch, then two stages to Mosul 4. He describes Mosul, its citadel, its suburb, the shrine of Jirjis and the mound of Yunus 5.

From Mosul to 'Ayn al-Rasad, then al-Muwaylha, then the island of Ibn 'Umar, then two stages to Nasibin 6. He describes Nasibin, its river and its water 7.

After Nasibin he mentions Sinjar, Dara and Mardin, where he met the judge and was hosted in his house 8.

From Mardin he turned back toward Baghdad. He reached Mosul and found the pilgrims' caravan outside it heading for Baghdad, and then he reached Baghdad 9.

Notes on pagination

The page numbers are the printed numbers of the 1958 edition. The scanned copy used in preparing this page adds one to the printed page number in the file.

The text does not give daily dates for each halt, so no dates have been entered. The numbers attached to the stations show only the order in which the text mentions them.

What the text does not say here

  • The return road from Tabriz to Baghdad is not described in detail.
  • Sinjar, Dara and Mardin have no place files in the data, so they are not included among the legs or the stations.
  • The road from Mardin to Mosul is not given stage by stage, and the journey from Mosul to Baghdad is not divided into legs.
