Overview

A stage of Ibn Jubayr's journey to the pilgrimage. He travelled upstream on the Nile from Cairo to Qus, passing Jabal al-Muqla, Manfalut, Asyut, Akhmim and Qina 1.

Stops

  • Jabal al-Muqla: Ibn Jubayr mentions it halfway between Egypt and Qus.
  • Manfalut: a place near the western bank, with markets. Its wheat is brought to Egypt because it is good.
  • Asyut: a city on the western bank, about three miles from the Nile, with date-palm gardens around it.
  • Akhmim: a city on the eastern bank, with two mosques and remains of Coptic buildings.
  • Qina: a city of Upper Egypt, on the eastern side of the Nile.

Between Akhmim and Qina the book mentions other places, among them Tayja'a, Minshat al-Sudan, al-Bulayna, Tishna, Tandara and Qift. Their modern locations are not known here 1.

Arrival

He reached Qus on Thursday, the twenty-fourth of Muharram, and lodged at the inn of Ibn al-Ajami at al-Munya, a suburb outside the city 1.
