Overview
The route
He left Baghdad after the afternoon prayer on Monday, the fifteenth of Safar 580, having stayed there thirteen days 2. He reached Mosul at sunrise on Tuesday, the twenty-third of Safar 3.
He stayed in Mosul four days, then left on Friday, the twenty-sixth of Safar, and spent the night at the rubat of Yunus near Tall al-Tawba 4. He reached Nasibin at the beginning of Rabi' al-Awwal 5. From Nasibin he reached Dunaysir on Thursday, the third of Rabi' al-Awwal, stayed there until Friday prayer, then went on to Ras al-Ayn, which he entered shortly before noon on Saturday, the fifth of Rabi' al-Awwal 6.
From Ras al-Ayn he set out toward Harran and then the Euphrates. He stayed on its bank on Thursday, the tenth of Rabi' al-Awwal, passed Raqqa on his left, and reached Manbij in the morning of Friday, the eleventh 7. Then came Buza'a at mid-morning on Saturday, the twelfth, and Aleppo at mid-morning on Sunday, the thirteenth 8.
He left Aleppo and reached Qinnasrin shortly before the afternoon on Thursday, the seventeenth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He reached Hama in the late morning of Saturday, the nineteenth 9. He left Hama in the evening of that Saturday, crossed the Orontes by a stone bridge near Rastan, and reached Homs at sunrise on Sunday, the twentieth 10.
From Homs he set out at early noon on Monday, the twenty-first, passing al-Mash'ar, al-Qara and al-Nabk. He reached the Khan of the Sultan built by Saladin, then crossed the pass of al-Iqab and stopped at al-Qusayr. He reached Damascus in the late morning of Thursday, the twenty-fourth of Rabi' al-Awwal 11.
Notes on pagination and dates
The page numbers follow the scanned file of the 1907 edition, not the printed page numbers. Some pages of this part appear in reverse order, so the description of a town or a night may come before the one that precedes it in the journey.
Hijri dates are taken from the text, and the year 580 is stated in it. Gregorian dates the text mentions (such as "June" and "July") were not calculated or listed.
On pages 182–184 the arrival at Nasibin is dated in two conflicting ways: p.184 gives the beginning of Rabi' al-Awwal, while pp.182–183 give the second of Rabi' al-Awwal after Sinjar. Here we followed p.184 alone.
The sequence between Ras al-Ayn, Manbij and Aleppo (pp.176–175), and between Aleppo and Hama (p.170), needs review, because the distances and days stated do not fully match the stages between the stations.
The road from Damascus to Acre is not included in this file, because the passage that was read does not describe an ordered route between Damascus and Acre.
