Overview

The march of the Mu'ta army from Medina to Mu'ta in Jumada al-Ula of the 8th year AH: three thousand fighters under the command of Zayd ibn Haritha, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, then Abdullah ibn Rawaha, through places that al-Rahiq names in order 1.

The route

The Prophet went out to see the army off, until he reached the pass of farewell (Thaniyyat al-Wada'), where he stopped and bade them farewell. The army then moved north until it halted at Ma'an in the land of Syria 2. The army stayed at Ma'an for two nights, discussing whether to ask Medina for reinforcements, until Abdullah ibn Rawaha encouraged them to go on 3.

Then the army moved into enemy land in al-Balqa'. Heraclius's forces met them at the village of Mashari, and then, as the enemy drew near, the Muslims withdrew to Mu'ta, where they camped and drew up for battle 3.

Note on the places

The pass of farewell and Mashari are named in the text. They are not included in the route, because their place files carry no coordinates. The text gives no number of days for each stage, so no days are attributed to the route. The only dates are the month of Jumada al-Ula of the 8th year AH, which al-Rahiq says corresponds to August or September 629 CE 4.
