Overview

The road to Khaybar: the march of the Prophet's army from Medina to Khaybar in the remainder of Muharram of the 7th year AH, after al-Hudaybiyya, by the places al-Rahiq names 1.

The route

The Prophet set out from Medina in the remainder of Muharram. He passed Mount 'Asr, then al-Sahba, and camped in the valley of al-Raji'. Ghatafan were a day and a night away from it. When they heard a noise from behind them, they thought that the Muslims had raided their families, so they turned back, and left the Prophet free to reach Khaybar 2.

Then the Prophet took two guides to lead the army by a road from the north, to prevent the Jews from fleeing toward Syria. The two stood at a junction of several roads, until the choice settled on the road known as Marhab 3.

On the road

On the way there are reports about the rajaz (battle verse), the takbir and travelling by night 4. At al-Sahba, at the near edge of Khaybar, the Prophet prayed the afternoon prayer, and then the army spent the night close to Khaybar on the night before the fighting. The Jews did not notice it, so when they came out to their land in the morning, there was the army 5.

The Incident of the Poisoned Sheep at Khaybar

Following the conquest of Khaybar, Zaynab bint al-Harith (wife of Sallam ibn Mishkam) sent the Prophet a roasted sheep heavily laced with poison; upon chewing a morsel, the Prophet spat it out stating that the bone informed him it was poisoned, while Bishr ibn al-Bara' swallowed a bite and died.
