Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy

عبد مناف بن قصي

Son of Qusayy who had already risen to leadership in his father’s lifetime; after his death his sons contested the offices with the sons of Abd al-Dar, and the siqaya and rifada fell to his line — inherited by Hashim, then al-Muttalib, then Abd al-Muttalib.

    Overview

Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy: Qusayy's son who grew honoured and ruling in his father's lifetime; the watering and feeding passed to his house in the division of offices between his sons and his brother Abd al-Dar's sons.

    Life

Abd Manaf grew honoured and ruling in his father Qusayy's lifetime, so Qusayy bequeathed to him the Quraysh offices he had held: Dar al-Nadwa, the gatekeeping, the banner, the watering and the feeding 1.

When Abd Manaf died his sons disputed these offices with their cousin Abd al-Dar's sons; Quraysh split into two factions and fighting nearly broke out, until they rallied to a settlement and divided them: the watering and feeding went to Banu Abd Manaf, while Dar al-Nadwa, the banner and the gatekeeping remained with Banu Abd al-Dar 2. Then Banu Abd Manaf cast lots over what had fallen to them, and it came out for Hashim ibn Abd Manaf 2.

    For young visitors
