Overview
Al-Mundhir ibn Ma' al-Sama': king of al-Hira who refused the Mazdakite creed and was deposed by Qubadh, then restored by Anushirwan after Mazdak's killing.
Life
In the reign of Qubadh ibn Fayruz, Mazdak arose preaching permissiveness; Qubadh and many of his subjects followed him. Qubadh sent to the king of al-Hira, al-Mundhir ibn Ma' al-Sama', calling him to choose this creed, but he refused out of jealous pride, so Qubadh deposed him and appointed in his place al-Harith ibn Amr ibn Hujr al-Kindi, who had answered the call 1.
Qubadh was succeeded by Kisra Anushirwan, who detested this creed deeply; he killed Mazdak and many of its adherents, restored al-Mundhir to the rule of al-Hira, and sought al-Harith — but he escaped to the Kalb territory 1.
For young visitors
Al-Mundhir was a king who refused a new creed, so the great king deposed him; then the king's son restored him after killing the creed's founder.
