Summary

Sulayman ibn Surad ibn al-Jawn al-Khuza'i, Abu al-Mutarrif. It is said his name was Yasar and the Prophet changed it 1.

Narration

He related from the Prophet, from Ali, Abu al-Hasan and Jubayr ibn Mut'im; from him related Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, Yahya ibn Ya'mar, Abdullah ibn Yasar and Abu al-Duha 1. Ibn Hajar describes him as "good and virtuous" 1.

After the Prophet

He witnessed Siffin with Ali and killed Hawshab in single combat 1. Then he was among those who wrote to al-Husayn, then fell behind him; he and al-Musayyab ibn Najaba came forward last of all and went out seeking his blood, four thousand strong 1.

His death

Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad met them at Ayn al-Warda with Marwan's army, and Sulayman and those with him were killed — in Rabi' al-Akhir of year 65 AH, when he was ninety-three on the day he was killed. His killer was Yazid ibn al-Husayn ibn Numayr, who hit him with an arrow; his head and al-Musayyab's were carried to Marwan 1.

The Expulsion of Jurhum from Mecca

After some twenty centuries of Jurhumite rule over Mecca, their tyranny over pilgrims and appropriation of the Kaaba’s wealth turns the Adnani clans against them; Khuzaʾa, with Banu Bakr ibn Abd Manaf, expels them in the mid-second century CE — and the departing Jurhumites bury Zamzam and carry off the two golden gazelles and the Black Stone.
