Ubayda ibn al-Harith

A Hashimi Muhajir, the eldest of the three Muslim duelists at Badr; he exchanged two blows with Utba ibn Rabi'a that left both mortally wounded, and died at al-Safra days later on the march home.

Summary
In the duel
When three of Quraysh's chiefs called for duels — Utba and Shayba, sons of Rabi'a, and al-Walid ibn Utba — and sent back the Ansaris demanding their equals of their own cousins, the Prophet ordered Ubayda, Hamza and Ali to stand 1. In Ibn Ishaq's account Ubayda — the eldest of them — duelled Utba ibn Rabi'a; in Ahmad and Abu Dawud's account Ubayda duelled al-Walid 2 3.
Two blows passed between him and his match, each disabling the other; Ali and Hamza returned upon Utba, killed him, and carried Ubayda away, his leg severed 2.
His death
He remained silent until he died at al-Safra' four or five days after the battle of Badr, the Muslims on their way to Medina 2.
