Summary

Umm Haram bint Milhan, maternal aunt of Anas ibn Malik 1.

Her name

Ibn Hajar says some say she is al-Rumaysa', and that Abu Nu'aym narrated it so — but the correct is that this describes Umm Sulaym, established in two hadiths of Anas and Jabir at al-Nasa'i. Abu Umar said: I find no confirmed name for her 1.

The sea hadith

In Sahih al-Bukhari and Malik's Muwatta, from Anas: the Prophet, when he went to Quba', would enter on Umm Haram and she would feed him and search his head for lice. He slept, then woke laughing, saying people of his umma had been shown to him riding the green sea like kings on couches. Umm Haram asked him to pray God make her of them; he said: "you are of the first" 1.

Her death

Ubada ibn al-Samit married her and took her out with him; when she crossed the sea she rode a beast that threw her and killed her 1. Ibn al-Athir says that was the Cyprus campaign and she is buried there; the army's commander was Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan in Uthman's caliphate, year 27 AH 1. Abu Umar mentions that Mu'awiya campaigned in person with his wife Fakhita bint Qaraza; Ibn Hajar mentions that in the Muwatta of Ibn Wahb her name is given as Kunud bint Qaraza, and Fakhita was perhaps her epithet — or Kunud her sister 1.

From Umm Haram related her husband Ubada ibn al-Samit, Umayr ibn al-Aswad, Ata' ibn Yasar and Ya'la ibn Shaddad 1.
