Summary

'Those Given Glad Tidings of Paradise' («المبشرون بالجنة») is a series of twenty-eight episodes by Mosaad Anwar kept in the Assabile archive, each about twenty-four to twenty-seven minutes long. 1 In the first episode he announces it as a new series he offers his listeners 'this year' under this title, stopping in each episode with one of those to whom the Prophet gave the glad tidings of Paradise to draw lessons and morals from the story; he says they number in the hundreds, men and women, and so he begins by describing the Paradise they were promised. 2 3 In the second episode he specifies that the programme covers not all the Companions but those among them promised Paradise. 4 It is not confined to the famous ten: six of them appear, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Sa'id ibn Zayd, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, Talha ibn Ubayd Allah, Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah and al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, beside other Companions, men and women, whom he says the Prophet promised Paradise. 5 6 7 In the twenty-first episode he says those promised Paradise are hundreds, even thousands, that most people barely know more than the ten, and that this is why he made these episodes. 8

Each episode opens and closes with a sung nashid, followed by the greeting, the sermon of need and the phrase 'a welcome return to those given glad tidings of Paradise'; the episodes on individual figures open with a riddle listing the subject's qualities and asking 'who is he?' before naming him, and close with a prayer that the listeners be gathered with him. 9 10 11 Neither the episode pages nor the episodes give a recording date, and the twenty-eighth episode closes like the others, with no farewell to the series and no next episode announced. 1 12 The archive's files for episodes 24 to 28 are numbered 25 to 29, so no file numbered 24 is kept. 1 The fourth episode breaks off mid-sentence at the twenty-fourth minute. 13

What this page holds is his account and explanation; hadiths and scholars' gradings of them are as he attributes them, and numbers, ages and dates are his statements. What he says on the strife among the Companions and on the Sunni–Shi'i dispute is not written here; it is recorded in the lane's log.

The episodes

Episode 1: Paradise. Mosaad Anwar opens the series by announcing a new series that he offers his listeners "this year" under the title 'Those Given Glad Tidings of Paradise', stopping in each episode with one of them and drawing lessons and morals from the story 2. He says those promised Paradise, men and women, number in the hundreds, and that he chose to begin by describing the Paradise they were promised 3. He lists some of its names, among them the Abode of Peace, the Abode of Eternity and the Gardens of Eden 14, describes its eight gates of gold and attributes to the two Sahihs that one of them, al-Rayyan, is entered only by those who fast 15 16, and relates through Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) the description of the first group to enter it 17. He then describes its trees and the tree Tuba, in whose shade a rider travels a hundred years 18 19, its rivers and springs, and al-Kawthar, whiter than milk and sweeter than honey 20 21, and the food, buildings, garments, servants and women of its people 22 23 24 25. Among its joys he counts the company of the prophets and of Abu Bakr and Umar 26, and makes the greatest of them looking upon the face of God, relating from Sahih Muslim the account of the Day of Increase, when the veils are lifted 27. He closes with the teaching that a person is gathered with those he loves, hoping his listeners will be gathered with those promised Paradise 28. (See Paradise.)

Episode 2: The Companions, the unique generation. He states that this is the second episode of the series 29, describes the Companions as the best generation humanity has known, chosen by God for His Prophet's company, and says that those promised Paradise among them are hundreds 30. He cites verses in their praise: the verse on men who kept their covenant with God, which he says was revealed especially about the martyrs of Uhud, naming among them Hamza, Mus'ab ibn Umayr, Sa'd ibn al-Rabi' and Anas ibn al-Nadr 31, and the verses of God's pleasure with those who pledged under the tree and on the foremost believers 32. He relates the hadith of the excellence of the Prophet's generation through Imran ibn Husayn 33, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri's hadith that spending the like of Mount Uhud in gold would not reach a handful of theirs 34, the hadith that the stars are a safeguard for the sky and the Companions a safeguard for the community 35, the hadith of the two funerals 36, and the hadith of the bands of fighters granted victory because Companions are among them 37. He explains that the programme covers those of the Companions promised Paradise, not all the Companions 4, and lists what he sees as a Muslim's duties towards them, such as praying for them, studying their lives, telling their stories to children and naming children after them 38. He also discusses attacks on some Companions, the words of some imams about those who disparage them, and the sects that in his view arose after them, which is not written here. (See the Ten promised Paradise.)

Episode 3: Bilal ibn Rabah (may God be pleased with him). He introduces Bilal as a riddle: a slave black of face and white of heart, freed by Abu Bakr, one of the first Muslims 10 39, whose kunya was Abu Abd al-Karim and who was "the first muezzin" 40. He relates from al-Hakim, through Ibn Mas'ud, that of the first seven who were tortured he alone did not give the polytheists what they wanted 41, and describes Umayya ibn Khalaf's torture of him as he repeated "One, One" and Abu Bakr's buying him for five ounces of gold 42 43 44. He tells of Bilal forgiving Abu Dharr for taunting him over his mother 45, says he was given the glad tidings of Paradise twice, and gives the hadith of the Prophet hearing his sandals in Paradise 46 47. He then relates his longing for Mecca while sick with fever in Medina 48, his proposal to the sister of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf 49, the story of the adhan and his being chosen for his fine voice 50, his call to prayer from the top of the Ka'ba on the day of the conquest 51, his weeping when he called the adhan after the Prophet's death 52, his going to Syria and his adhan at al-Aqsa at Umar's request 53 54, and his words to his wife as he died, that tomorrow he would meet the beloved ones 55. (See Bilal ibn Rabah.)

Episode 4: Ukasha ibn Mihsan. He presents Ukasha as a hero of the Muhajirun, promised by the Prophet entry to Paradise without punishment or reckoning, who died in Abu Bakr's time fighting the apostates 56 57. He relates his command of the raid on al-Ghamr and his return with two hundred camels 58 59, and the stick of firewood that became a sword in his hand at Badr, which he reports from Ibn Kathir 60. He then relates the hadith of the nations shown to the Prophet and the seventy thousand who enter Paradise without reckoning, and Ukasha standing to ask the Prophet to pray that he be one of them 61 62, followed by hadiths on how many of the community will enter Paradise 63 64. He dwells at length on the qualities of the seventy thousand: ruqya and the scholars' views on it 65 66 67, cautery 68, taking omens and its common forms 69 70, and then trust in God, with the examples of Hajar and Mary 71 72 73. At the end of the recording he returns to Ukasha and his longing for Paradise after the Prophet's death, and the available recording breaks off at the twenty-fourth minute 13. He also discusses folk practices against the evil eye, which is not written here. (See Ukasha ibn Mihsan.)

Episode 5: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf. He presents him as "an honourable model of the Muslim businessman" 74, of Banu Zuhra and one of the Ten promised Paradise 75. He relates his embracing Islam through Abu Bakr and the Prophet's changing his name from Abd Amr to Abd al-Rahman 76, his two emigrations, to Abyssinia and then to Medina 77, his brotherhood with Sa'd ibn al-Rabi', his declining Sa'd's wealth and asking for the market 78 79, and his marriage for a date-stone's weight of gold 80. He relates the Prophet's praying one rak'a of the dawn prayer behind him 81, and then dwells on his generosity, reporting from al-Dhahabi: the people of Medina dependent on him, his bequest to the veterans of Badr, his gift to the Army of Hardship 82 83 84 85, his plain dress, and his weeping while fasting as he remembered Mus'ab ibn Umayr 86 87. He relates his indifference to power and his prayer to die before Uthman 88 89, and his death in 32 AH and burial in al-Baqi' 90. (See Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf.)

Episode 6: Umm Zufar. He introduces her as a woman Companion of the people of Paradise, Khadija's hairdresser, an Abyssinian Black woman 91 92, and relates through Ata' from Ibn Abbas her story: she complained to the Prophet of seizures in which she became uncovered, chose patience and Paradise over a prayer for healing, and asked him to pray that she would not become uncovered 93. He draws lessons from it: that the people of Paradise are known by their qualities or by name through a text, and that no one is declared bound for Paradise or the Fire without a text 94 95; the definition of backbiting and the six cases in which the law permits mentioning an absent person 96 97; the kinds of complaint, what this woman did being complaint with contentment 98; and the two kinds of epilepsy and their remedies 99 100. He says that during her seizures she was seen clinging to the coverings of the Ka'ba 101, and closes with the hadith on shame 102. He also comments on one of the suitors in the story of Fatima bint Qays and compares her modesty with the dress of some girls today, which is not written here. (See Umm Zufar.)

Episode 7: Fatima bint Muhammad (part 1). Mosaad Anwar calls Fatima "the sweet basil of the Chosen One" and says she was born in Mecca five years before the mission, while Quraysh were rebuilding the Ka'ba, and was the Prophet's youngest daughter and the child most like him 103 104 105. He relates from al-Bukhari, through Ibn Mas'ud, how she threw off her father's back the camel's afterbirth that Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt had laid between his shoulders as he prostrated at the Ka'ba, after which the Prophet invoked God against the leaders of Quraysh, whom Ibn Mas'ud later saw dead in the well of Badr; he draws from it her courage 106 107 108 109. He then recalls the siege in the ravine and Khadija's death after it, the Prophet calling Fatima "her father's mother" 110 111, her emigration, her care for the wounded at Uhud and her stopping her father's bleeding with the ash of burnt matting 112 113 114. He tells of her marriage to Ali after Badr, her dowry of a Hutami coat of mail, her modest household goods and Hamza's wedding feast, drawing the lesson that an easy engagement and a light dowry are a woman's blessing 115 116 117 118 119. He closes with her request for a servant from the captives, the Prophet's preference for the people of the Suffa and the glorification, praise and magnification he taught her and Ali, advising the weary to turn to remembrance of God 120 121 122 123. He also discusses inflated marriage inventories today and figures on unmarried women that he links to informal marriage, which is not written here. (See Fatima.)

Episode 8: Fatima bint Muhammad (part 2). He continues her life, holding that no household is free of disagreement but that the Prophet's household referred to revelation and settled its quarrels quickly 124 125. He tells the story of "Abu Turab": Ali left the house annoyed and slept in the mosque, and the Prophet came and woke him playfully and led him home; he warns parents against intruding in their married children's homes 126 127 128. He recalls Ali's love for her and his two verses to the arak twig, and urges husbands to speak tenderly to their wives, as the Prophet did with Aisha 129 130. He then counts her glad tidings of Paradise and her likeness to her father in speech, and the Friday when the Prophet came down from the pulpit to carry al-Hasan and al-Husayn 131 132 133, and the secret of his final illness that made her weep and then laugh 134 135. He says she lived six months after him and dates her death to 3 Ramadan 11 AH; Ali washed her, al-Abbas led the prayer and she was buried at night in al-Baqi' beside her sisters 136 137 138. He also discusses Ali's proposal to the daughter of Abu Jahl, and her request to Abu Bakr for her inheritance and what passed between them afterwards, which is not written here. (See Fatima.)

Episode 9: Sa'id ibn Zayd. Mosaad Anwar presents him as an early emigrant who took part in every campaign but Badr, and as one of the ten named in the hadith he attributes to al-Tirmidhi 6 139. He says Sa'id's father Zayd died a monotheist before the mission, and that Sa'id was Umar's cousin and brother-in-law 140 141. He relates from Sahih Muslim the dispute Arwa bint Uways brought against him before Marwan ibn al-Hakam and his prayer against her, counting him among those whose prayers were answered, and here warns against seizing sisters' inheritance 142 143 144 145. He then tells the story of Umar's conversion in the house of Sa'id and Fatima bint al-Khattab (may God be pleased with her), where Khabbab was teaching them the Qur'an, concluding that all Umar's deeds count in Sa'id's favour 146 147 148 149. He recounts Sa'id's part at Ajnadayn and Yarmouk, and the Byzantine commander's offer of money to Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) to withdraw, which Khalid answered with a defiant reply; he holds that Muslims never won by numbers, giving Hattin, Ain Jalut and the Tenth of Ramadan crossing as examples 150 151 152 153. He closes with Sa'id's refusal of the governorship of Damascus and his death at al-Aqiq aged seventy-five and burial in al-Baqi' 154 155. He gives the sizes of the armies and the Muslim command at Yarmouk in two conflicting versions, which are not written here. (See Sa'id ibn Zayd.)

Episode 10: Abd Allah ibn Salam. Mosaad Anwar presents him as a rabbi of the Children of Israel in Medina, once named al-Husayn and renamed Abd Allah by the Prophet, who read in the Torah the description of a final prophet and longed to meet him 156 157 158. He relates that on seeing the Prophet's face Ibn Salam knew it was not the face of a liar, then asked him three questions only a prophet could answer and became Muslim, asking that his people be questioned about him before they learned of it 159 160 161 162; he gives another version with his aunt Khalida bint al-Harith beneath the palm tree 163. He then lists the glad tidings given him: the leftover in the bowl, Mu'adh ibn Jabal's deathbed advice to seek knowledge from him, and a verse al-Tabari reports was revealed about him 164 165 166; his dream of the pillar and the firmest handhold 167; and his carrying firewood through the market to drive away pride 168. He relates his pact with Salman al-Farisi (may God be pleased with him) and the dream message "rely on God and rejoice", explaining reliance as taking every means and leaving the outcome to God 169 170, and closes with his presence at Nahawand and his death in Medina 171 172. He also makes general statements about Jews, which are not written here. (See Abd Allah ibn Salam.)

Episode 11: Haritha ibn al-Nu'man. Mosaad Anwar presents him as one of the Ansar and lists his merits before naming him: he became Muslim through Mus'ab ibn Umayr, was proverbial for devotion to his mother, was heard by the Prophet reciting in Paradise, saw Gabriel twice, and fought at Badr and in every campaign 173 174; his name, he says, is Haritha ibn al-Nu'man al-Khazraji al-Ansari 175. He tells of the Aqaba pledge and Mus'ab's mission, and that Haritha heard the Qur'an from Mus'ab and became Muslim, then invited his mother Ja'da bint Ubayd, who became Muslim, and his whole family followed 175 176 177; he rejoiced when the Prophet lodged with Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, both being of Banu al-Najjar 178. At Hunayn, he says, Haritha was among the hundred who held firm with the Prophet when the army scattered 179 180. In a report he attributes to Ahmad, noting that Ibn Hajar graded its chain sound in al-Isaba, Haritha passed the Prophet sitting with Gabriel, greeted them and went on; the Prophet later told him Gabriel had returned his greeting and said he was among the hundred steadfast at Hunayn whose provision in Paradise God had guaranteed 181 182. He relates from Aisha that the Prophet dreamt he was in Paradise and heard Haritha reciting, and said: such is devotion; Haritha was the most devoted of people to his mother, feeding her by hand and never asking her to repeat herself 183 184. He then digresses on devotion to parents with examples from Zayn al-Abidin, Kahmas and Abu Hanifa, who he says was imprisoned and flogged for refusing a judgeship under Abu Ja'far al-Mansur and wept for fear of grieving his mother 185 186 187 188 189, and lists the ways of honouring parents after their death 190. He says Haritha lived in Medina, going out with the armies, until he died in the time of Mu'awiya and was buried in al-Baqi' 191.

Episode 12: Khadija bint Khuwaylid (may God be pleased with her) (part 1). Mosaad Anwar lists Khadija's firsts before naming her, and gives her title al-Tahira, her lineage, the Prophet's love for her and Aisha's jealousy of her 192 193 194 195. He tells of her dream before the marriage and Waraqa ibn Nawfal's interpretation, the Prophet's trading journey to Syria with her capital and her servant Maysara, Nafisa's mediation and Abu Talib's marriage address 196 197 198 199, saying she married him at forty when he was twenty-five and that all his children were hers except Ibrahim 200 201. He then relates his seclusion in the cave of Hira' with her provisions, the first revelation, her reassurance and her taking him to Waraqa 202 203 204 205, and reflects on the name of Surat al-Alaq as a call to set pride aside 206. He closes with the siege in the ravine of Abu Talib and the termites that ate the boycott document, Khadija's leaving it ill and her death, her ten years of patience with him and her burial at al-Hajun 207 208 209 210 211. He also answers critics of the Prophet, speaks of Abu Talib's faith and of the number of perfected women, which is not written here. (See Khadija.)

Episode 13: Khadija bint Khuwaylid (part 2). Mosaad Anwar relates Gabriel's glad tidings to Khadija of a house in Paradise of qasab with no clamour and no toil, and her reply to the greeting, drawing the lesson that the reward matches the deed 212 213 214. He speaks of Gabriel appearing in human form, and says the Prophet saw him in his true form twice 215 216. He advises wives to make the home a place of rest for a husband back from work 217, and tells the story of Umm Sulaym: when her son died while her husband Abu Talha was away, she kept the news from him until they had been together, then gave him the parable of a loan reclaimed by its owners; the Prophet prayed for blessing on them, and they had a son who, by his count, had nine sons who all memorised the Qur'an 218 219. He then cites the hadith of the best women of Paradise 220, Aisha's jealousy of Khadija, the Prophet's gifts to Khadija's friends and his words that he had been granted her love 221 222, and Khadija's gift to Halima al-Sa'diyya 223. He also answers deniers of the Ascension, discusses the hadith on women's "deficiency in reason and religion" and rules of testimony, and the number of perfected women and Aisha's age, which is not written here. (See Khadija.)

Episode 14: Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas (may God be pleased with him). Mosaad Anwar presents him as one of the Ansar who became Muslim through Mus'ab ibn Umayr, an eloquent speaker whom the Prophet had answer the orators of visiting delegations, so that he was called "the Messenger's orator" 224 225. He relates that Thabit heard the Qur'an from Mus'ab in the house of As'ad ibn Zurara and became Muslim, that his mother Kabsha bint Waqid became Muslim, and that he married Habiba bint Sahl after she had become Muslim 226; on meeting the Prophet he stood and asked what the Ansar would receive if they protected him as they protected themselves and their children, and the Prophet said: Paradise 227. He relates from Sahih Muslim that when the verse in Surat al-Hujurat forbidding voices raised above the Prophet's was revealed, Thabit, who had a loud voice, stayed home weeping; the Prophet asked Sa'd ibn Mu'adh about him and then said he was of the people of Paradise 228 229; in a version he attributes to al-Hakim, the Prophet promised him he would live praised, be killed a martyr and enter Paradise 230. He says Thabit took part in every campaign except Badr, and under Abu Bakr went out under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid against Musaylima, who claimed a share in prophethood and whose army, by his count, reached fifty thousand 231 232 233 234. He relates from al-Bukhari, through Anas, that at al-Yamama Thabit put on embalming perfume and his shroud, carried the banner of the Ansar and fought until he was killed, and that Musaylima was killed by Wahshi ibn Harb 235 236 237; his three sons Muhammad, Yahya and Abd Allah were killed fighting after him 238. He closes with the dream in which Thabit, after his death, told of his armour hidden under a cooking pot and of debts he owed; the armour was found and Abu Bakr paid the debts, and he says no one else is known whose will was carried out after his death 239 240. He also mockingly recites what was attributed to Musaylima and what his followers said, which is not written here. (See Thabit ibn Qays.)

Episode 15: al-Husayn ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him) (1). He introduces the episode as about a man given the glad tidings of Paradise through an angel who brought them to the Prophet, who passed them on to him: Abu Abdallah al-Husayn, son of Ali, whom he describes as a noble imam, a hero, a martyr and the Prophet's "sweet basil". 241 242 He reports from al-Zubayr that al-Husayn was born on 5 Sha'ban in the year 4 of the Hijra, and from Ja'far al-Sadiq that only a single period of purity separated the pregnancies of al-Hasan and al-Husayn, attributing this to al-Tirmidhi in the Manaqib. 243 He cites Ali, as recorded in the Abridgement of Ibn Asakir's History of Damascus, that al-Husayn most resembled the Prophet from the chest to the feet and al-Hasan in the face, and he lists the nobility of his lineage: his mother Fatima, his grandmother Khadija, his father Ali, his brother al-Hasan and his grandfather the Prophet. 244 245 He relates that Ali had named each of his two sons "Harb" and the Prophet changed the names to al-Hasan and al-Husayn, attributing this to Ahmad, Ibn Hibban and al-Bazzar with a chain he calls sound, and digresses on the Prophet's love of good words and his changing of names with an off-putting meaning. 246 247 He gathers reports of the Prophet's love for the two: his prayer that God love them, the angel who came down with the tidings that Fatima is the mistress of the women of Paradise and al-Hasan and al-Husayn the lords of its youth, the hadith of the Cloak from Umm Salama, his coming down from the pulpit during the Friday sermon to carry them, his lengthened prostration when one of them rode on his back, and his seeking protection for them every morning. 248 249 250 251 252 253 He tells of al-Husayn as a child climbing the pulpit of Umar and Umar's gentleness with him, of Umar giving the two brothers the same stipend as their father, and of Abu Bakr carrying al-Hasan on his shoulders while Ali laughed. 254 255 256 He says al-Husayn campaigned in the time of Uthman in the conquest of Ifriqiya with Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas and Ibn al-Zubayr, and reports that some said he joined the first army to raid Constantinople. 257 258 He also discusses the report of Abdallah ibn Umar and the questioner from Iraq, and the relationship between the Companions and the Prophet's household, which is not written here. He closes by deferring the account of al-Husayn's martyrdom to the next episode. 259 (See Husayn ibn Ali.)

Episode 16: al-Husayn ibn Ali (2). He narrates al-Husayn's journey with his household towards Kufa until he was killed at Karbala. 260 261 He discusses the views held about Yazid ibn Mu'awiya and the views on where al-Husayn's head was buried. 262 263 He also goes into the details of the journey and the battle, the responsibility for the killing, his own preference among the views on Yazid, and remarks on the Shi'a and on the shrines attributed to the head, which are not written here. (See the Battle of Karbala.)

Episode 17: Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman (may God be pleased with him), keeper of the Prophet's secret. He introduces Hudhayfa as a Companion born in Medina and of Meccan origin, who with his father and mother were Companions; he says his father al-Yaman, Husayl ibn Jabir of Abs, fled to Medina and allied with the Banu Abd al-Ashhal, and that al-Yaman embraced Islam in Mecca and then took his son there, who embraced Islam in the Prophet's presence. 264 265 266 267 He says the Prophet entrusted him alone with the names of the hypocrites, and relates how Umar adjured him to say whether the Prophet had named him among them, how Umar would not pray over a funeral Hudhayfa did not attend, and Hudhayfa's oath in Sahih Muslim that he was the most knowledgeable of people about the trials until the Hour. 268 269 270 271 He relates the report of the angel Hudhayfa saw with the Prophet, bringing the tidings of the precedence of Fatima, al-Hasan and al-Husayn in Paradise, attributing it to al-Nasa'i in Fada'il al-Sahaba. 272 He says Hudhayfa took part in every campaign but Badr because of a pledge Quraysh had taken from him and his father, and that his father was killed by mistake by Muslims at Uhud, and Hudhayfa forgave and gave away the blood money. 273 274 He places Hudhayfa's glad tidings at the Confederates, when the Prophet sent him to bring news of the enemy and promised him his companionship in Paradise. 275 276 He relates that Hudhayfa fought at al-Qadisiyya and chose the land of Kufa, alerted Uthman to people's disagreement over recitation so that they were united on one mushaf, and was appointed by Umar over al-Mada'in, which he entered on a donkey; he closes with Hudhayfa's last words on loving poverty, humility and death. 277 278 279 280 281 282 (See Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman.)

Episode 18: Umm Sulaym bint Milhan (may God be pleased with her). He introduces Umm Sulaym of the Ansar and notes that scholars differ on her name, al-Ghumaysa', al-Rumaysa' or al-Rumaytha'. 283 284 He relates that she embraced Islam through Mus'ab ibn Umayr while her husband Malik ibn al-Nadr remained an unbeliever, that she taught her son Anas the two testimonies, and that when Abu Talha sought her hand she made his Islam her dowry, attributing this to the Sunan of al-Nasa'i from Anas. 285 286 287 He tells the story of the death of her son by Abu Talha and how she kept the news until morning, the Prophet's prayer of blessing for the couple, and the birth of Abdallah, whose palate the Prophet rubbed with a date and whom he named, and reports that from Abdallah came nine children, all memorisers of the Qur'an. 288 289 290 291 He relates that she offered Anas to the Prophet as a servant, that she gathered the Prophet's sweat in a flask, that she went out on campaigns tending the wounded, and the dagger she carried on the day of Hunayn. 292 293 294 295 As the proof of her glad tidings he gives Muslim's hadith of the Prophet hearing her footsteps in Paradise, and lists her family: her brother Haram ibn Milhan, her sons al-Bara' and Anas, and her sister Umm Haram. 296 297 He closes with advice to mothers on teaching children to keep confidences, saying that the soundness of women is the soundness of the community. 298 299 (See Umm Sulaym bint Milhan.)

Episode 19: Hafsa bint Umar (may God be pleased with her), Mother of the Believers. He introduces Hafsa as given the glad tidings of Paradise, a Mother of the Believers and the Prophet's wife in this world and the next, an emigrant to Abyssinia and then to Medina, a learned woman, the daughter of Umar and sister of Abdallah ibn Umar, and the one to whom Abu Bakr entrusted the mushaf. 300 He says she learned to write from al-Shifa' bint Abdallah al-Adawiyya, was among the most eloquent women of Quraysh, and embraced Islam with Umar's household when he did. 301 302 He relates her marriage to Khunays ibn Hudhafa, one of the earliest Muslims, her emigration with him to Abyssinia, her return to Mecca and her emigration to Medina, and that Khunays was badly wounded at Badr and died in Medina, where the Prophet prayed over him and he was buried in al-Baqi' beside Uthman ibn Maz'un. 303 304 305 He relates from al-Bukhari how Umar offered her in marriage to Abu Bakr and then to Uthman, the Prophet's saying that someone better than both would marry her and Uthman would marry someone better than her, who in his account is Ruqayya, the Prophet's daughter, and Abu Bakr's explanation that he had heard the Prophet mention her and would not disclose his secret; he draws from it that there is no shame in a man offering his daughter to a righteous man, and a lesson in keeping confidences. 306 307 308 309 310 He says that between her and Aisha there was affection like that between Abu Bakr and Umar. 311 He relates from the two Sahihs Umar's warning to his daughter, the Prophet's month of keeping apart from his wives in the upper room, and the revelation of the verse of choice after the wives had asked for more maintenance, and their choosing the Prophet. 312 313 314 He relates from al-Tabarani, with a chain whose men he says are the men of the Sahih, that the Prophet divorced her and Gabriel came telling him to take her back because she fasted and prayed much and was his wife in Paradise, and makes this the proof of her glad tidings. 315 He says Abu Bakr placed the mushaf he had compiled in her house for her trustworthiness and learning, that it stayed with her through the times of Umar and Uthman, that Uthman made a copy of it for every region and returned it to her, and that she was buried in al-Baqi' with the Prophet's wives. 316 317 He also discusses the maghafir and Mariya stories, the ranking of the Companions in merit, and the date of her death and her age at different stages of her life, which are not written here. (See Hafsa bint Umar.)

Episode 20: Umm Umara Nusayba bint Ka'b al-Maziniyya. He introduces Nusayba bint Ka'b as one of the two women who pledged to the Prophet at the Second Aqaba with seventy-three men, the mother of the martyr killed by Musaylima and the mother of one of his killers. 318 319 He relates the mission of Mus'ab ibn Umayr to Medina and how the Ansar slipped out at night to the pledge, and that the Prophet took the two women's pledge in words because he does not shake hands with women, from which he draws his view that shaking hands with a woman outside the family is not permitted. 320 321 322 323 He lists women who came first in the faith, Khadija, Sumayya and Hajar, and holds that the community's soundness lies in the soundness of its women. 324 325 He relates her defence of the Prophet at Uhud when the Muslims broke: the shield she took, her stand with Mus'ab against Ibn Qami'a and the wound to her shoulder, the Prophet's words about her as he reports them from Ibn Sa'd, and the Prophet's prayer that she, her husband and her two sons be his companions in Paradise. 326 327 328 329 330 He tells of the martyrdom of her son Habib ibn Zayd at Musaylima's hands, her going out to al-Yamama until Musaylima was killed by Wahshi and her son Abdallah ibn Zayd, and her return with more than fifteen wounds and a severed hand. 331 332 333 He also replies to those who disagree with him on handshaking, which is not written here. (See Nusayba bint Ka'b.)

Episode 21: Umm Haram bint Milhan (may God be pleased with her), martyr of the sea. He opens by saying that those given the glad tidings of Paradise number hundreds, even thousands, though most people know barely ten, which is why this series exists. 8 He introduces Umm Haram, the martyr of the sea, one of the early Muslims among the women of the Ansar and from a family of martyrs: her husband Amr ibn Qays and her son Qays ibn Amr were martyred together at Uhud, and her brother Haram ibn Milhan was martyred at Bi'r Ma'una, saying as he was struck that he had won, by the Lord of the Ka'ba; she was the sister of Umm Sulaym and the aunt of Anas ibn Malik. 334 335 336 337 He relates that when she learned of the martyrdom of her husband and son she said the words of return to God and did not wail, and prayed for reward and a better replacement, and that she then married Ubada ibn al-Samit, whom, he says, Umar described as a man worth a thousand. 338 339 340 He relates from Muslim that the Prophet led Anas, his mother and his aunt in a voluntary prayer at their home, and from al-Nawawi that she and her sister were the Prophet's aunts, unmarriageable to him by fosterage or by lineage, and that he used to take his midday rest at their homes. 341 342 He relates from al-Bukhari and Muslim her glad tidings of being in the first army of the community to raid by sea, and the Prophet's dream in her house of people of his community riding the sea like kings on thrones. 343 344 He says the first Muslim fleet set out in Uthman's time under Mu'awiya to conquer Cyprus in the year 27 of the Hijra, with Abu Dharr, Abu al-Darda' and Ubada among its men, and that when they landed her mule threw her, her neck was broken and she died a martyr and was buried in Cyprus; he reports from al-Dhahabi that the Franks used to visit her tomb and called it the tomb of the righteous woman. 345 346 347 348 He sees in the hadith one of the proofs of prophethood, and says that the Companions numbered, by his count, more than a hundred thousand, who spread out across the lands. 348 349 (See Umm Haram bint Milhan and the first raid on Cyprus.)

Episode 22: Ammar ibn Yasir (may God be pleased with him). He identifies Ammar as Abu al-Yaqzan al-Ansi of Mecca, a client of Banu Makhzum, and tells how his father Yasir came to Mecca looking for a missing brother, settled there and became the ally of Abu Hudhayfa ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumi, who married him to Sumayya bint Khayyat (may God be pleased with her). 350 351 He narrates that Ammar accepted Islam at the house of al-Arqam and his parents then accepted it through him, that Banu Makhzum tortured them on the open ground, and that Abu Jahl killed Sumayya with his spear, making her the first woman martyr in Islam, before Yasir too was killed. 352 353 354 355 He cites al-Hakim's report on Ammar being forced to utter words of disbelief while his heart was at rest in faith, and draws from it, as his own view, that declaring someone a disbeliever has strict rules and that the judgement belongs to the courts, not to preachers. 356 357 Among his merits he counts that he was the first in this community to build a mosque, at Quba, and hadiths in his praise, among them that Paradise yearns for him, Ali and Salman, and the story of Khalid ibn al-Walid, who spoke harshly to him and then sought his goodwill. 358 359 360 He mentions his presence at Badr and every campaign, his fighting at al-Yamama with his ear severed, and his governorship of Kufa under Umar and his humility there. 361 362 363 364 He says Ammar was granted martyrdom after reaching ninety-three and was buried in his clothes, and closes with the hadith that a person will be gathered with those he loves. 365 366 367 He also discusses the account of Ammar's death and what passed among the Companions in the strife, which is not written here. (See Ammar ibn Yasir.)

Episode 23: Salman al-Farisi. He presents Salman as the man who searched for the truth for twenty years, the first of the Persians to Islam, and the man behind the idea of the Trench. 368 He tells the story in Salman's own voice: the son of the headman of Jayy in Isfahan, he was keeper of the fire in the Magian religion, was drawn by Christian prayer and fled to Syria, and passed by deathbed referrals from Syria to Mosul, Nusaybin and Amuriya, until the man of Amuriya told him the signs of a prophet who would emigrate to a land between two lava fields. 369 370 371 372 373 Then men of Kalb betrayed him, he was sold as a slave and taken to Medina, and he tested the three signs of prophethood until he was certain and accepted Islam. 374 375 He explains mukataba, and tells how the Companions helped Salman with three hundred palm shoots that the Prophet planted with his own hand, and how he paid forty uqiyas from a piece of gold the Prophet gave him and was freed. 376 377 378 He describes the Trench, Salman's advice, the digging and the withdrawal of the Confederates. 379 380 381 From his character he relates his counsel to Abu al-Darda' to give each right its due, his carrying the load of a man who did not know him, his hosting guests with bread and salt, his weeping at death over some twenty-odd dirhams, and his death at eighty as though asleep. 381 382 383 384 385 (See Salman al-Farisi.)

Episode 24: Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. He presents Sa'd as having accepted Islam when the Muslims could be counted on one hand, as a man whose prayers were answered and the first to shoot an arrow in God's cause, and says he grew up to be the best archer in Mecca. 386 387 He tells the story of his mother, who refused food to turn him from his religion, and the revelation of the verse on keeping kind company with parents who associate partners with God, and cites hadiths on his merits: his being the Prophet's maternal uncle through Banu Zuhra, the hadith of the Ten, the Prophet offering his parents as Sa'd's ransom at Uhud, and his prayer that Sa'd's prayers be answered. 388 389 390 391 392 He tells of his governorship of Kufa, Usama ibn Qatada's complaint against him and Sa'd's prayer against the man, holds that Umar removed him for neither weakness nor betrayal, and says Umar later placed him among the members of the Shura. 393 394 395 396 397 He describes al-Qadisiyya with the numbers he gives, Sa'd's illness there and his command from a rooftop, counts it with al-Yarmuk as the greatest battles of the Rashidun age, and lists his conquests after it. 398 399 400 401 He closes with Sa'd's blindness in old age and his contentment with God's decree, his death at al-Aqiq and his burial in al-Baqi'. 402 403 He also discusses Sa'd's position in the strife after Uthman's killing and the account of his prayer against a man who reviled Ali, which is not written here. (See Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.)

Episode 25: Talha ibn Ubayd Allah. He calls Talha the living martyr and says he accepted Islam through Abu Bakr, was of Banu Taym and was one of the six Umar chose for the caliphate, and gives his years of birth and death in the hijri reckoning as he states them. 404 405 406 He narrates that Talha missed Badr because the Prophet had sent him with Sa'id ibn Zayd to gather news of the caravan. 407 He gives Uhud in detail: the archers' plan, the turn of the battle, the Prophet's wounds, the stand of seven Ansar and two men of Quraysh, Sa'd and Talha, and Talha's defence until his hand was crippled and he had taken, by his count, thirty-nine wounds. 408 409 410 411 412 He cites the hadiths of the martyr walking on the earth and of Talha having «made it binding». 413 Of his generosity he relates how Talha gave away, the morning after it arrived, seven hundred thousand dirhams that came from Hadramawt and gave a Bedouin the price of a piece of land, and of his character his defence of Abu Hurayra. 414 415 416 He closes with the account of his body being moved from its grave after thirty years, and with his sons and wives. 417 418 He also discusses the strife after Uthman's killing, the Battle of the Camel and Talha's death, which are not written here. (See Talha ibn Ubayd Allah.)

Episode 26: Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. He introduces Ja'far as the man of the two emigrations, the Prophet's cousin and among those most like him in appearance and character, Ali's elder brother by ten years, and an early convert. 419 420 The longest part of the episode is the emigration to Abyssinia: Ja'far set out with his wife Asma' bint Umays and eighty others for the land of a just king, and Quraysh sent Amr ibn al-As and Abd Allah ibn Abi Rabi'a with gifts to demand their return, in a report he attributes to Ahmad's Musnad from Umm Salama. 421 422 The Muslims came in led by Ja'far and prostrated to God alone; he described to the Negus what they had been in the Jahiliyya and what the Prophet called them to, recited the opening of Surat Maryam so that the Negus and his bishops wept, and answered about Jesus when Amr returned the next day, and the king granted them safety and returned Amr's gifts. 423 424 425 426 427 He then tells of Ja'far's arrival on the day Khaybar fell in the year 7 and the Prophet's joy at it, and of the generosity that earned him the name "father of the poor", in a report he gives from al-Bukhari through Abu Hurayra. 428 429 He ends with Ja'far's martyrdom at Mu'ta: three thousand against a hundred thousand Byzantines by his count; his hands were cut off as he held the banner and God gave him two wings; Ibn Umar saw ninety-some wounds on his body, none in his back; and he was buried at Mu'ta. 430 431 432 433 He also comments on a point of Christian doctrine, which is not written here. (See Ja'far ibn Abi Talib.)

Episode 27: Abu Ubayda Amir ibn al-Jarrah. He introduces him as a man who became Muslim through Abu Bakr at the very beginning, the first to be called "the trustee of the community", one of the Ten, present at every campaign and the conqueror of Syria, whom Abu Bakr meant to make leader and whom Umar, dying, said he would have appointed had he been alive. 7 434 He follows his life: his emigration to Abyssinia and then Medina, his killing of his own father at Badr when the father had come out as an unbeliever to kill the Prophet, and his drawing the two helmet rings from the Prophet's face with his teeth at Uhud until his front teeth fell out. 435 436 437 He tells how Abu Ubayda yielded command to Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) at Dhat al-Salasil, of the Khabat expedition in which each man was down to one date a day until the sea cast up the ambergris whale, and of the Prophet naming him the trustee of this community when the delegation of Najran asked for a trustworthy man, in a report he attributes to al-Bukhari. 438 439 440 441 In Syria he tells of Abu Ubayda hiding the letter dismissing Khalid until victory was won, the stratagem of the pits at Latakia, and Umar's visit to his bare house. 442 443 444 Along the way he laments lands that Islam entered and later left, such as al-Andalus, where by his count it remained seven hundred years. 445 He closes with the plague of Amwas in the year 18: Abu Ubayda refused to leave his troops when Umar summoned him, showed his visitors the plague sore on his palm in hope of martyrdom, and was buried in Jordan. 446 447 448 449 (See Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah.)

Episode 28: al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (may God be pleased with him). He introduces him as the son of the Prophet's aunt and his disciple, present at every campaign and at the conquests under Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, and tells his audience that every Egyptian owes him a debt, since Islam reached Egypt through him and those with him. 450 451 He tells of his orphaned childhood, raised to horsemanship by his mother Safiyya, his conversion as the fifth Muslim at fifteen, the uncle who tortured him with smoke, and his swim across the Nile on a waterskin to bring the emigrants news of the Negus, in a report he attributes to Ibn Hisham from Umm Salama. 452 453 454 455 He lists the marks of his courage: the wounds of Badr and al-Yarmuk on his shoulder, the naming of his sons after martyrs, his being one of the Muslims' two horsemen at Badr, his volunteering three times at the Trench until the Prophet called him his disciple, his breaking twice through the Byzantine ranks at al-Yarmuk, and his storming of the Babylon fortress after a seven-month siege. 456 457 458 459 460 461 From Asma' bint Abi Bakr he relates the hardship of their early married life and her regard for his jealousy, and he tells of al-Zubayr charging his son Abd Allah to pay his debt with the help of his Master, God, and of the son's announcing at the pilgrimage season for four years until it was paid. 462 463 464 465 He also discusses the killing of Uthman, the strife that followed, al-Zubayr's part in it and his killing, and a report about his jealousy with his two wives, which are not written here. (See al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam.)
