Juhayna

جهينة

An Arab tribe of Quda'a whose lands lay between Medina and the Red Sea coast; Ibn Ishaq mentions it in the Prophet ﷺ's detachments: Jundab ibn Makith al-Juhani (may God be pleased with him), narrator of Ghalib's raid on Banu al-Mulawwah, was of it, as was the clan al-Huraqa to which Mirdas ibn Nahik, killed in Ghalib's raid on Banu Murra, belonged.

Overview

Juhayna is a tribe of Qudaa living between Medina and the sea coast. Ibn Ishaq does not give it a biography in the fourth volume, but it appears in the accounts of the expeditions through its men. 1 Among them is Jundab ibn Makith al-Juhani, who related the expedition of Ghalib ibn Abd Allah against Banu al-Mulawwah, in which he was the lookout of the people. 1 Among them too is the branch of al-Huraqa, to whom Mirdas ibn Nahik belonged, the ally of Banu Murra, who was killed in the expedition of Ghalib on the land of Banu Murra after he pronounced the testimony of faith. 2

Source flags

  • Ibn Hisham gives the attribution of al-Huraqa to Juhayna on the authority of Abu Ubayda, and the wording is confused in some manuscripts, as the editors note. 2
  • The lineage of Juhayna within Qudaa and its dwellings are well known from the genealogy books, but are not read in these pages (needs_source).

Banu Murra

A tribe of Ghatafan at Fadak; Bashir ibn Sa'd raided them, and Ghalib ibn Abdullah al-Laythi raided their land and struck Mirdas ibn Nahik, an ally of theirs from al-Hurqa of Juhayna, whom Usama ibn Zayd and an Ansari killed after he had said there is no god but God.
