Overview

A stage of Ibn Jubayr's pilgrimage: from Granada by land to the island of Tarifa, then by sea to Alexandria, and from there through the Delta to Cairo 1.

The route

He left Granada in the first hour of Thursday, the eighth of Shawwal 578 2. He passed Jaen, then the fortresses of al-Ghaydaq, Qabra, Istanja, Ashuna, Shalbara and Arkash, then the village of al-Nushma, and reached the island of Tarifa on Monday, the twenty-sixth of Shawwal 2.

He boarded ship. His course included Ceuta and the two islands of Majorca and Sardinia. A storm drove them back to land, and then they returned to the sea 3, until they landed at Alexandria on Saturday, the twenty-ninth of Dhu al-Qa'da 4.

From Alexandria he went to Damanhur on the morning of Sunday, the eighth of Dhu al-Hijja 5. He then crossed the Nile at a place known as Busa, by a ferry boat, and spent the night at Bayrama. He passed Tandata on the day of Eid al-Adha, then Subk, Mulayj, Qalyub and al-Munya 5. He entered Cairo, and then Misr, on Wednesday, the eleventh of Dhu al-Hijja, after the afternoon prayer 5.

The text then continues up the Nile to Qus 6. That part is not included in this journey, because Qus does not yet have a place file.

Notes on pagination and dates

The page numbers follow the scanned file of the 1907 edition, not the printed page numbers. The pages of this part appear in reverse order in the file, so higher numbers may come before lower ones in the description.

The Hijri dates are taken from the text: departure from Granada on the eighth of Shawwal, arrival at Alexandria on the twenty-ninth of Dhu al-Qa'da, and entry into Cairo on the eleventh of Dhu al-Hijja. The year 578 is stated in the text. Gregorian dates the text mentions were not calculated or listed.

The sea route between Granada and Alexandria is not divided into ordered stations in the text, and this is noted in the first stage.
