Summary

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri is Sa'd ibn Malik ibn Sinan al-Ansari al-Khazraji, famed by his kunya. He was found too young for Uhud — his father was martyred there — and campaigned in all that came after 1.

Transmission

He related much from the Prophet, and from Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali and Zayd ibn Thabit; from him relate, of the Companions, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, Jabir, Mahmud ibn Labid, Abu Umama ibn Sahl and Abu al-Tufayl, and of the great Successors Ibn al-Musayyab, Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, Tariq ibn Shihab and Ubayd ibn Umayr 1. He transmits copiously: Hanzala ibn Abi Sufyan said of his shaykhs that "he was among the most knowledgeable of the younger Companions", and al-Khatib said he was among the most excellent Companions and preserved much hadith 1.

A pledge to speak truth

Al-Haytham ibn Kulayb relates in his Musnad that Sahl ibn Sa'd said: I pledged to the Prophet — I, Abu Dharr, Ubada ibn al-Samit, Muhammad ibn Maslama, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and a sixth — that no blamer's blame would take us in God; the sixth begged release and was released 1.

Reports and narrations

Ahmad relates through Atiyya from Abu Sa'id: "my father was killed a martyr on the day of Uhud and left us with no wealth, so I came asking the Messenger of God; when he saw me he said: 'whoever seeks self-sufficiency God suffices him, and whoever seeks to be chaste God makes him chaste', so I went back." The root of this hadith is in the two Sahihs through Ata' ibn Yazid with another story 2.

In Ibn al-Shukhayr's account, Abu Sa'id went out on the day of al-Harra and entered a cave; a Syrian came in on him and said "come out", he said "I will not come out, and if you come at me I will kill you" — Abu Sa'id set down the sword and said: "bear your own sin". The Syrian asked: are you Abu Sa'id al-Khudri? He said yes; he said: then ask forgiveness for me 2.

Sa'id ibn Mansur relates that they said to him: blessed are you with having seen the Messenger of God and his company; he said: "you do not know what we have wrought after him" 2.

His death

Al-Waqidi said he died in 74 AH; it is also said 64 AH. Al-Mada'ini said 63 AH, and al-Askari 65 AH 2.
