Summary

Samura ibn Jundab ibn Hilal al-Fazari, kunya Abu Sulayman. Ibn Ishaq said: he was among the allies of the Ansar — his mother brought him after his father's death and an Ansari man married her 1.

The review of the lads

The Prophet used to review the Ansar's lads; a lad passed by him and he passed him for the expedition, and Samura was presented and turned back — Samura said: "you passed this one and rejected me; had I wrestled him I'd have thrown him" — the Prophet said: "then at him" — and he wrestled him and threw him, and was passed 1. From Abdullah ibn Burayda, from Samura: "I was a lad in the Messenger of God's time, and I used to memorise from him" 1.

In Basra

He settled in Basra; Ziyad used to leave him in charge of it when he went to Kufa. He was hard on the Khawarij so they reviled him, while al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin praised him — Ibn Sirin said: in Samura's letter to his sons there is much knowledge 1. Abu Raja' al-Utaridi, al-Sha'bi, Ibn Abi Layla, Mutarrif ibn al-Shikhir and others related from him 1.

His death

Samura died before year 60 AH 1. Ibn Abd al-Barr says he fell into a vat of boiling water — fulfilling the Messenger of God's word to him, Abu Hurayra and Abu Mahdhura: "the last of you to die will die in fire". There are several sayings on his year of death: year 58, or 59, or the start of year 60 AH 1.
