Summary

Zuhayr ibn Surad, a chief of Hawazin's chiefs; he headed their delegation to the Prophet at al-Ji'rana in Dhu al-Qa'da of year 8 AH after the division of Hunayn's spoils 1.

Heading the Hawazin delegation

Hawazin's delegation came to the Prophet as Muslims, fourteen men headed by Zuhayr ibn Surad, among them Abu Burqan, the Prophet's milk-uncle 1. They asked him to bestow the captives and wealth on them, presenting words that melt hearts; the Prophet gave them the choice between the wealth and the sons and women — they chose their kin, saying: we would not exchange our kin for anything 1.

The Prophet taught them the plea-formula after the noon prayer; he and Banu Abd al-Muttalib waived their shares, the Muhajirun and Ansar followed, and six thousand of Hawazin's women and children were returned — the Prophet clothed them each in a Coptic garment 2.

For young visitors

Zuhayr led a delegation of his people asking the Prophet to free their families' captives; the Prophet freed them all, clothed them in new garments, and they returned home safe.
