Short answer

Arab historians divided the Arabs by lineage into the extinct peoples, whose histories are lost, such as 'Ad and Thamud; the original Arabs (al-'Arab al-'Aariba) descended from Qahtan, whose home was Yemen; and the Arabized Arabs (al-'Arab al-Musta'riba) descended from Isma'il, called the Adnanites, among whom were the Quraysh 1.

Detailed answer

Historians divided the peoples of the Arabs into three groups according to the lineages they descend from. The first are the extinct Arabs, the earliest peoples whose history is not known in enough detail, such as 'Ad, Thamud, Tasm, Jadis and 'Amaliq. The second are the original Arabs, descended from Ya'rub ibn Yashjub ibn Qahtan, and called the Qahtanites. The third are the Arabized Arabs, descended from Isma'il, and called the Adnanites 1.

The home of the original Arabs was the land of Yemen. Their best-known tribes were Himyar and Kahlan. Clans of Kahlan migrated from Yemen and spread across the peninsula: the Azd toward the Hijaz, Oman and Syria; Tayy toward the two mountains; and Kinda toward Hadramawt and Najd 1 2.

The Arabized Arabs descend from the offspring of Isma'il, whom his father Ibrahim settled in Mecca. From his son Qaydar came Adnan, then Ma'add. From his son Nizar branched Iyad, Anmar, Rabi'a and Mudar. From Mudar came Kinana, and from Kinana came the Quraysh 3 4. For the general entry, see The Arabs and their peoples before Islam.

This division is the one that Arab genealogists set out, as al-Raheeq al-Makhtum relays it from its sources. Recent studies have a different view of the origins of the Arabs, which has not yet been added.
