Shaddad ibn Aws

Shaddad ibn Aws ibn Thabit al-Khazraji, nephew of Hassan ibn Thabit, Abu Ya'la — or it is said Abu Abd al-Rahman ¹.

Abu Umar said Malik called him Hassan's cousin; he was corrected — he is Hassan's nephew, not his cousin. Ibn Hajar mentions that Ibn al-Qasim transmitted from Malik "his cousin or his nephew", doubting; the correct is the second ¹. Ibn al-Barqi says his father Aws ibn Thabit witnessed Badr and was martyred at Uhud; Bukhari said: it is said Shaddad witnessed Badr, but it is not established ¹.

He related from the Prophet and from Ka'b al-Ahbar ¹. Ibn Abi Khaythama relates from Ubada ibn al-Samit: Shaddad ibn Aws was "of those given knowledge and forbearance" ¹. From Abu Hurayra: Shaddad was favoured with two traits — clear utterance when he spoke, and self-restraint when angered ¹.

Al-Tabarani narrates that he was with the Messenger of God as the Prophet breathed his last, and he said to him: "what is with you, Shaddad?" He said: the world has narrowed on me. He said: "it is not on you — Syria will be conquered and Bayt al-Maqdis will be conquered, and you and your son after you will be imams among them, God willing" ².

Al-Baghawi said he dwelt at Hims ². Ibn Sa'd said he died in 58 AH at seventy-five, a man of worship and striving; Abu Nu'aym said he died in Palestine in Mu'awiya's days; Ibn Hibban said he is buried at Bayt al-Maqdis in year 58 AH — or it is said he died in year 41 or 64 AH ².
